This Model 1873 rifle has fixed blade and notch rear sights with a Vernier tang peep sight. The right side of the receiver is marked "MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS" and the left side is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC 6, 1859" followed by "1873". The lower tang is marked with the serial number. The rifle has a half octagon barrel with no provisions for a forearm. The nicely figured select walnut straight grip stock is checkered as well as the pistol grip mounted on the lever. The stock is fitted with a nickel plated Swiss type buttplate. Model 1873 Maynard rifles used a cartridge with a very thick rim which could be used to extract them from the barrel. An example of a "thick head Maynard" dummy cartridge is included in this lot.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 80% original blue finish thinning to a brown with very limited pin point pitting. The frame retains traces of original case colors (especially on the lower tang) with the mixed balance between silvered out case colors and smooth gray patina. The buttplate retains 95% original nickel finish. The wood is very fine with exception of a hairline crack on the left side of the wrist, along with some minor handling marks. The checkering is crisp. Mechanically excellent.
