The left side of the casehardened receiver is marked "MERRIMACK ARMS & MFG. CO. / NEWBURYPORT MASS. / BALLARD'S PATENT / NOV 5 1861". Has the dual percussion/cartridge action. Smooth forearm and straight grip stock with crescent casehardened buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 70% thinned original blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces retain 40% original case colors. The receiver has numerous fine surface scratches with an area of tool marks behind the hammer. The lever has a mottled gray patina with an area of erosion on the inside near the trigger when latched. The wood is fine with some minor dings and scratches and most of the varnish remaining. The forearm has a couple minor gouges, a missing sliver of wood (left side), and a small hairline crack (right side near cap). Mechanically excellent.
