Description:

This is a very good original example of a Winchester Fourth Model 1866 lever action carbine that was manufactured in 1877. The carbine has a blue barrel and magazine, casehardened hammer and loading lever and distinctive brass frame. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut and the stock has a brass carbine style butt with sliding trap. The butt trap contains a four-piece steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The carbine front sight is integral with the barrel band. The dovetailed mounted rear sight is the two-leaf non-adjustable pattern with sight apertures graduated "1", "3" and "5". A steel saddle ring is attached to the left side of the frame. The barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The script serial number, "149511" is located on the lower tang between the lever latch and the lower tang screw. The serial number is the only marking on the brass frame. Included with the carbine are fifteen rounds of ammunition.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The carbine is completely original. The carbine barrel and magazine have a deep brown patina. The barrel markings are clear. The barrel bands are a mottled steel gray. The case colors on the hammer and loading lever have aged to a dark patina. The brass frame has not been polished and remains in very good condition. The side plate joints are tight and the side plates show no indication of having been removed from the frame. The frame is generally free from scratches and handling wear. The brass buttplate has the same un-polished patina as the frame. The stock and forearm are in good overall condition with moderate handling wear. The markings, "PP/WH/4" are lightly carved in the left side of the stock. The markings are contemporary with the carbine and are barely visible without close inspection. This is a solid original, un-touched example of the classic western Winchester Model 1866 Carbine.
