Description:

Sharps Model 1877 Rifle with factory data letter. The letter states that the Sharps factory records show the rifle was originally invoiced to Wallace Gunn, a Sharps employee, on June 29, 1877. The records show that the rifle was subsequently invoiced to Colonel John Glynn of the Louisiana National Guard in New Orleans, Louisiana, on July 21, 1877. The records describe the rifle as a "Long Range #1 Model 1877 Special" with 34" caliber .45-100-550- 2 4/10, target barrel, target sights and a Vernier rear sight mount on the stock heel. The rifle has a blue barrel and casehardened receiver, hammer, breechblock, lever and lock. The stock and forearm are well-figured English walnut. The stock has a checkered pistol grip and checkered, hard rubber, shotgun butt. The pistol grip has an ornamental curl and a horn inlay at the bottom. The forearm is checkered with a curl at the tip and a horn cap. The barrel is fitted with a New Model windgauge globe sight with spirit level. The receiver tang has a long range Vernier rear sight with peep cup and 4 5/8" stem. The sides of the rear sight are not graduated. A mount for a Vernier rear sight is inlaid on the top of the stock heel. The barrel is roll-stamped with the "Old Reliable" trademark followed by "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN." in single line. The left side of the receiver is marked: "SHARPS RIFLE CO/PAT APR 6 1869" in two lines. The serial number "160203", is stamped on the receiver tang perpendicular to the bore. "SHARPS FIREARMS" by Frank Sellers indicated that 46 Model 1874 Long-Range No. 1 rifles were manufactured between January 1877 and March 1879.

Rating Definition:

Fine as refinished. The rifle barrel has been refinished. Some scattered light pitting is visible beneath the blue finish on the barrel. The receiver, lock, hammer and lever retain the original casehardened finish. The case colors have faded to a silver-gray patina. There is scattered light pitting on the sides and top of the receiver. The barrel and receiver markings are clear. The reoiled stock and forearm are both in fine condition. The checkered panels are sharp and nearly all of the finish remains intact. The stock and forearm show only minor handling wear. This is a solid representative example of a well-documented example of a rare Sharps Model 1877 No. 1 Long-Range Rifle.
