This Type III Model 1816 musket was manufactured in 1833. The Model 1816 Musket was the primary infantry long arm during the Mexican War and many muskets were converted to percussion in the 1850s. They were extensively issued by both the Federal and Confederate armies during the first two years of the Civil War. This musket was converted to percussion and then re-converted to the flintlock configuration. The musket had an National Armory bright finish. The lock plate is marked "SPRING / FIELD / 1833" in three vertical lines behind the hammer and "eagle/shield/U.S." stamped ahead of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1833". The left rear of the barrel is marked "P / eagle head / V" proof followed by "19". The stock is the correct full length military version. The left side stock flat has a circled "EG" cartouche and the left side plate is stamped with the letter "S". The front trigger guard finial is stamped "H / SD". And the buttplate tang is stamped "US". Complete with an original iron trumpet ramrod and "US / W?" marked socket bayonet.

Good, as reconverted back to flintlock configuration. The barrel has a mottled artificial brown and silver gray patina with some minor oxidation at the breech end and visible signs of where the bolster on the barrel has been removed and filled in. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth dark brown patina. There is a crude triangle cut into the right side of the stock, otherwise the stock is very good with scattered minor dents, dings and scratches associated with a gun of this age. The cartouche is clear. The markings are readable. The action is fine. The bayonet is very good with a smooth mottled silver gray patina.
