Description:

This American scrimshawed powder horn measures approximately 9 1/2" long. The body of the horn features an outstanding and detailed depiction of a large eagle with shield. The eagle grasps five arrows in his left claw and a vine in his right claw and is next to a fish. Above the eagle are a series of star burst patterns that lead to "E. PLURIBUSUNUM" in a banner. The body of the horn also has ornate borders near the base and towards the spout. Carved spout with a 2 1/2" diameter wood base. Consignor notes state that the powder horn was made in 1819 during Illinois statehood.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. There is some chipping and a few cracks near the base with a couple hairline cracks near the spout. The horn shows some wear and there are areas were the images are faint, but overall the well executed images remain clear. A very attractive, definitely authentic, relief carved, Patriotic Scrimshawed Powder Horn!
