Description:

Japanese matchlock pistol with gold and silver inlaid barrel. The pistol is 22-inches long and has a 12 1/2-inch iron barrel. The octagon barrel has a cannon muzzle with inverted "v" front sight. The barrel has a gold inlaid dragon motif on the barrel between the upper barrel band and the muzzle and a silver character inlaid between the upper and lower barrel bands. The pistol has brass barrel bands, lock plate, trigger guard and oval trigger. The lock has an external spring and brass priming pan cover. The stock is lacquer-finished hard wood. The pistol appears to date from the early to mid-19th century.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The iron barrel has a dark patina with extensive heavy pitting. Both the gold and silver barrel inlay remain in good condition. The brass lock, barrel bands and furniture have not been polished and have a very attractive age patina. The stock is in good-very good condition and retains much of the original lacquer finish; wear is limited to some minor dents and scratches and a crack in the bottom between the barrel bands.
