Description:

Colt Single Action Army Revolver manufactured in 1928. This revolver is one of 506 Single Action revolvers chambered for the .44 S&W cartridge. It is one of the last Single Action revolvers produced that bear the distinctive caliber marking: "RUSSIAN AND/S&W SPECIAL/44" on the left side of the barrel. In 1930 these markings were changed to "44 SPECIAL". The revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter. The letter describes the revolver as caliber .44 S&W, with 5 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish and rubber stocks. The letter further states that the revolver was shipped to the Tufts-Lyon Arms Co., in Los Angeles, California, on October 20, 1928. The barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap have the Colt commercial blue finish. The frame, loading gate and hammer are color casehardened. The hammer has borderless knurling on the spur. The black, hard rubber, stocks are checkered with the Rampant Colt trademark in an oval. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.Co.HARTFORD CT.U.S.A." in a single line. The caliber designation is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel. "44" is stamped on the underside of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'three-date in two-line' patent marking followed by the Rampant Colt trademark with and arc beneath the rear hooves ('Rampant-Rocking Horse'). The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "685". The left side of the trigger guard bow is stamped with a "1" assembler's mark above the "Triangle V/P" proofmark. "40" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. The serial number, "352740" is located on the bottom of the frame and on the side of the back strap and trigger guard underneath the grips. The serial number, "352740" is etched on the inside of both grips. All of the serial numbers match.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains at least 95% of the original blue and casehardened finish. There is minor finish wear on the barrel at the muzzle and a small spot of very light pitting on the left side of the barrel mid-way between the muzzle and the caliber marking. The frame, loading gate and sides of the hammer have nearly all of the vivid case colors. The case colors on the top of the hammer have a silver patina. The screws have all of the deep blue finish. Most of the fiery niter blue finish is present on the trigger. The markings are crisp. There is a small chip in the heel of the left grip; the grips are in otherwise excellent condition. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is an excellent example of a pre-WWII Colt Single Action Army with scarce "Russian and S&W Special 44" markings.
