Description:

Manufactured in 1874, the second year of production. This revolver features the standard blade front and notch rear sights and is fitted with smooth one piece walnut grips. The top of the barrel is marked with the early one line address with no caliber marking on the left side. The left side of the frame is marked with the two line, two patent date marking and, correctly, without Rampant Colt. The left rear trigger guard shoulder is marked "45 CAL". The complete matching serial number is marked on the frame, trigger guard and back strap with partial serial number "1686" on the barrel under the ejector rod housing and on the cylinder. The assembly number "17" is marked on the inside of the loading gate. The frame was casehardened, with blue remaining parts and fitted with smooth one piece walnut grip.

Rating Definition:

Very good as partially refinished, the cylinder, and barrel, with much of the blue finish remaining in the flutes, as well as some minor pitting, and a smooth artificial brown patina on the balance. There are scattered traces of the original blue finish on the barrel and ejector housing, mixed with smooth artificial brown patina, with some minor pitting on the muzzle end of the barrel. The front sight has been repaired during the period of usage as pitting is present under the base. The trigger guard retains 40% original blue finish with a smooth mottled brown patina on the grip straps and frame. There is some minor pitting on the frame ahead of the cylinder. With the exception of three small gouges on the bottom right side the grip is also fine with much of the original varnish, some lower edge wear and some scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings remain crisp and clear. There is a slight bit of play in the cylinder, otherwise the action is excellent.
