Description:

Approximately 25,000 Model 1875s were manufactured between 1875 and 1889. Very few of these were engraved with even a lesser amount with blue finish. The barrel, underside of the ejector housing, frame, cylinder flats and trigger guard are engraved with New York style floral scroll and punch dot background designs. The top of the barrel is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y. U.S.A." (breech to muzzle), with a double wavy line border ending in a decorative design and the sides of the ejector housing have a double wavy line and scallop and dot designs. There are no caliber markings indicating 44 Remington Centerfire and the inside of the loading gate is stamped with the number "817". The matching number, "817" also appears under the grip on the lower left side. Pinched blade front sight and notch rear sight and fitted with smooth two piece ivory grips. Seldom are these Remington Model 1875s found finished blue as most were nickel plated, and even scarcer engraved. At one time experts agreed this was the only one known, but writer knows of another. None the less a very rare specimen of a highly desirable antique revolver.

Rating Definition:

Very good. There are strong traces of the original blue finish on the lower ejector housing and protected areas of the frame and trigger guard. (Nearly all of the original blue remains under the ejector rod assembly. The balance of the metal surfaces have a smooth brownish gray patina. The grips are a bit loose due to a stripped grip screw, but remain very fine with light handling marks and an attractive aged grain. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is fine.
