Description:

These rare "Transition" revolvers were manufactured circa 1888-1889 with a total production of less than 1,000. This model is identical in appearance to the Model 1890 revolver. Hartley & Gramham referred to these revolvers as the "New Model Pocket Army". Having assumed control of Remington Arms Company in 1888, it is likely that these revolvers were specifically made for Hartley & Graham with parts on hand at the factory. The web ejector housing is numbered 2 stamped over 1 76. The left side of the frame and loading gate are stamped with the number "4". The top of the barrel is marked "E REMINGTON & SONS. ILION .N.Y.U.S.A.", (slightly off center), reading toward the breech, (normally found reading toward the muzzle), and believed to be the only Model 1888 marked in this manner. The upper left side of the frame just forward the cylinder is stamped "44" indicating 44-40 caliber and further indicating that Hartley & Graham used leftover parts. Brass blade and frame notch sights, no lanyard ring and fitted with smooth walnut grips. Normally found with a 5 3/4" barrel, this particular revolver has a rare 7 3/8" barrel. Brass blade front and frame notch rear sights, made without a lanyard stud and ring on the butt and fitted with smooth two piece walnut grips with he name "DICK", "N/A" and another unreadable penciled marking on the inside of the left panel.

Rating Definition:

Very Fine. The revolver retains 60% of the original nickel finish with most of the cylinder and part of the barrel having a smooth gray patina. There are numerous small dings on the underside, muzzle end of the barrel and some scattered minor flaking, and high edge wear. The grips are good. The left panel has a minor crack on the inside, there are a few minor dents and dings on the bottom edges, overall minor dings and scratches and a hand rubbed patina. The markings are clear. There is some slight play in the cylinder, otherwise the action is very good. A nice example of a rare Remington Model 1888 Transition Single Action Army revolver with a 7 3/8" barrel.
