A) U.S. Springfield Model 1871 Rolling Block Rifle

Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S.
Model: 1871
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 50-70
Barrel: 36 inch round
Finish: bright/casehardened
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1473
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 221
Class: Antique
Description:

Blade front and ladder rear sights on the bright barrel. Casehardened receiver, with "MODEL 1871" on the left side, eagle motif over "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD 1872" on the right, and the two line Remington paten marking on the upper tang. Smooth straight grip stock with two barrel bands, a clear script cartouche on the wrist, sling swivels, "13" stamped behind the lower tang, and "US" marked steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has mottled brown-gray patina. The receiver retains traces of silvered out original case colors with the balance a smooth brown patina and the buttplate has a smooth brown patina with some minor spotting. The wood is also very good with some minor dings and scratches with exception of a couple small hairline cracks near the tangs and an area of shallow gouges on the forearm (left side extending from the lower band to the receiver). Mechanically fine.

B) U.S. Springfield Model 1896 Krag Bolt Action Parade Rifle

Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S.
Model: 1896
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 30-40 Krag
Barrel: 30 inch round
Finish: chrome
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1473
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 221
Class: Antique
Description:

This is an example of a Model 1896 Krag Bolt Action Parade Rifle which has been chrome plated. Over the years firearm experts have assumed that these types of Model 1896 Krag rifles were not plated by a U.S. government arsenal, but were done by commercial firms for military units and fraternal organizations. The chrome plated rifles added to the "spit-and-polish" of a professional organization and viewed by millions during the course of many miles of marching in a variety of parades. The rifle has a pinned blade front sight and a ladder rear sight with graduations from 7 to 19 (base is graduated from 300-600), with the standard U.S./model/serial number marking on the receiver. Varnished stock and handguard with a faint circled "P" in the grip area.

Rating Definition:

Replated. The rifle retains much of the later applied chrome plating with minor flaking overall and a smooth dark brown patina on the buttplate. The wood is refinished with some minor dings, scratches, and pressure marks with most of the varnish remaining. The forearm has a few minor cracks ahead of the rear sight and missing a large chip and the buttstock has a hairline crack near the upper tang. Mechanically good.
