Description:

Set of silver flatware liberated from the home of Rudolf Hess, by Sergeant Richard Cowling, at the end of WWII. The set originally had 120 pieces, with twelve 10 piece place settings. This 10 piece place setting includes: demitasse spoon, ice cream spoon, teaspoon, large soup spoon, fish knife, dinner knife, dinner fork, luncheon fork, and dessert fork. Each piece has the matching pattern, with the dessert fork and fish knife having additional engraving. Four pieces have a "RH" monogram on the bottom of the handle. All pieces are stamped "800" for the silver content, with the dinner knife marked "J.A. HENCKELS, SOLINGEN/ ZWILLINGSWERK" and the luncheon knife marked "GESCHUTZT" on the blades. Included with the set is a signed/notarized affidavit from Sergeant Cowling's niece, along with a photograph of the Sergeant and a brief biography on Hess.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall. The silver has darkened with age, with the spoons and the dessert fork showing the most. The dinner and luncheon knives have some pitting on the blades.
