Description:

1) This knuckle knife is made from a cut down Model 1873 Springfield bayonet. An example is shown on page 163 of "U.S. Fighting Knives Book III" by M.H. Cole. Cole states these knives were manufactured for the O.S.S. to drop to irregular forces in the Philippine Islands during WWII. It has a steel knuckle bow and grooved rubber hose type grip. 2) This fighting knife is made from a 8" Patton saber blade. The blade is marked "S [flaming ordnance bomb] A / 1914" on the left side and "US / 22409" on the right side. The knife has checkered grip panels. A similar knife is illustrated on page 186 of "U.S. Military Fighting Knives" Book III. The top of the left grip panel is hand marked "Wm F.Stl" with a leather scabbard which has a tooled pattern and is hard marked in ink "WILLIAM F. STICKLE / 33,101,979". During the Second World War, Stickle was an official U.S. war photographer of the 407th Infantry Regiment, 102nd Infantry Division. Stickle received a bronze star in connection with military operations against German forces in February 1945. While constantly exposed to hostile fire in forward positions, Stickle photographed leading elements in assault river crossings and continued combat activities as the task force moved through successive towns towards its objective.
