Remington 40-X heavy barrel target rifle with U.S. markings. The Remington "WR" date code stamped on the left side of the barrel indicates that the rifle was manufactured in August 1868. The right side of the barrel is stamped with Remington "REP" proofmarks. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "U.S./ 22 LONG RIFLE/25817B" in three lines. "REMINGTON/ MODEL 40-X" is roll-stamped on the left side of the receiver. The serial number, "25817" is electro-penciled on the underside of the bolt. The rifle has a 28-inch heavy factory free-floated barrel. The barrel is factory drilled and tapped for a globe front sight base and target telescopic sight blocks. The top of the receiver is factory drilled and tapped for a telescopic sight base and the left side of the receiver is factory drilled and tapped for a micrometer rear sight base. The rifle is fitted with the original front sight base, telescopic sight base and micrometer rear sight base. The rifle has a an oil-finished walnut target stock with factory White Line rubber buttplate. The stock has a full-length accessory rail and the original hand stop with sling swivel. The Remington 40X Heavy Barrel Match Rifle was a premium quality .22 target rifle. Designated "M12" by the Army; limited numbers of 40-X Remington Heavy Barrel Rifles were purchased for Army and ROTC rifle team use during the 1960s.

Excellent. The rifle is completely original and retains 98% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel and receiver. The bolt shows only very limited cycling wear. The bore is perfect. The stock is in excellent condition with all of the original oil finish. Wear is limited to some very minor handling marks. This is an outstanding example of a hard to find U.S. M12 Remington 40-X Heavy Barrel Match Rifle in excellent condition.
