Description:

This is a very late WWII production pistol being manufactured in early 1945 and having been issued to Lt. Colonel John M. Bathum, U.S.M.C. Information on Lt. Col. Bathum is limited, though records place him as commander of Company A of the First Provisional Marine Battalion in 1942, which was assembled to provide security for the Naval Operating Base established near Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The left side of the slide is marked with "REMINGTON RAND INC./ SYRACUSE, N.Y. U.S.A." and a "P" proof on top of the slide ahead of the rear sight. The right side of the frame is stamped with the faint Ordnance Corps cartouche behind the grips with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" and "M1911A1 U.S. ARMY" in front of the grip, with a "7" on the front trigger guard bow. The left side of the frame is marked with the "F.J.A." and "P" inspection marks above and below the magazine release respectively. The serial number has the late style "No." marking. It has the correct late checkered and stamped trigger, with the slide release being checkered and the thumb safety and main spring housing being serrated. It has the narrow serrated hammer spur and late production blued Flannery marked barrel, with a pair of late war style Keyes Fiber grips and a parkerized magazine marked with a "R" stamped on top of the toe. It is complete with an original WWI lanyard. Included with the pistol are a number of campaign medals and ribbons including the U.S. Victory medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal, U.S.M.C. American Theatre Campaign medal, U.S. Navy European-African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign medal, Nation Defense Service medal, Military Merit medal, a Korean Service medal, pendant and pendant ribbon, seven uniform ribbon bars, a U.S.M.C. tie bar and glass paperweight, Colonel Bathum's dog tag and watch with his name on the back, sterling silver Lt. Colonel insignias, pistol medal and numerous dress uniform buttons, Lt. Colonel Bathum's U.S.M.C. ID card and special passport, twenty year American Legion service cap and a Zippo lighter bamboo engraved inscribed with the initials "H.D.M." on the lid, a blood chit, leather construction, 9 3/4" by 10", with the U.S. and Nationalist Chinese flags at the tops, untranslated writing at the bottom (note: not serial numbered), a China-Burma-India theatre patch, and a very large grouping of photographs in an album, mostly featuring soldiers from both World Wars, military equipment, and also including one photo of Bob Hope, shots of Benito Mussolini's corpse on display in Milan and three shots of thermonuclear weapons tests at the Bikini Atoll, including a shot of the Baker detonation.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 95% plus of the original WWII parkerized finish showing minor edge and high spot wear, along with some light handling marks. The grips are also in excellent condition with some pressure dents. Mechanically excellent. The chit shows some mild staining, and the photographs, medals and ribbons are all fine to very good, with wear and fading appropriate to age.
