Description:

The original Charles Lancaster was a barrel maker for both Joseph Manton and the first James Purdey. Single brass bead sight on the concave solid rib marked "CHARLES LANCASTER unreadable BOND unreadable LONDON". The chambers gauge between 2 1/2" and 2 3/4", choke at modified/modified with an extractor. Each side of the barrel flat is marked with a "crown/V" and "crown/GP" proofmark and the water table is marked with two "crown/V" proofs. The bottom of each barrel is marked with an unrecognizable proof and "5205". The locks, action, hammers, break lever and forearm hardware are engraved with floral scroll designs and each lock is marked "C. LANCASTER / LONDON". The trigger guard is engraved with two hunting dogs. Damascus pattern barrels, with a checkered splinter forearm with ebony forend tip, straight grip stock with an initial oval, and iron buttplate with a 4 1/2" engraved tang. Complete in a canvas covered case with maroon lining and Charles Lancaster label affixed to the inside of the lid. LOP 14 1/4".

Rating Definition:

Partially refinished, the barrels, with half of the brown finish remaining and showing most of the Damascus pattern. The locks retain 20% original case colors in the protected areas around the hammer. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The stock comb and 2" of the butt have been pieced in, otherwise the wood is good with a few scattered minor dents and dings and relatively crisp checkering. Unless noted above, the markings and engraving are clear, with the exception of the engraving and serial number on the lower tang which are fading. Mechanically fine. The case is good with some heavy corner wear.
