Description:

Manufactured circa 1894, this is an example of a rare Model 1889 Musket with a 30" barrel and full length military style forearm. It is estimated that only 67 Muskets were produced and only 3 in the 38-40 caliber (the balance were in 44 caliber). Apparently most of these were shipped to China and this is the only 38-40 known to exist. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address/patent dates and the caliber marking ".38-W." is marked at the breech. The top of the receiver is marked "MARLIN SAFETY" flanked by fancy brackets and the serial number appears on the bottom of the receiver. Blade front and folding carbine rear sights, cleaning rod mounted on the left side of the forearm with a sling swivel on the front barrel band, blue barrel and receiver, with casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate. There is a sling swivel mounted on the bottom of the receiver directly ahead of the lever. Mounted with a straight grip walnut stock with a carbine buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel retains 70% original blue finish with wear on the muzzle and areas of flaking. The receiver is mostly a smooth mottled gray patina with some scattered minor pitting. The hammer and lever have a smooth mottled brown patina with a small amount of minor pitting on the lever. The buttplate has a dark patina with some minor oxidation. The buttplate is good with numerous scattered minor dings and scratches. The forearm is re-varnished. The markings are crisp. The action is excellent. A nice example of a very rare Musket configuration Marlin Model 1889 lever action rifle.
