Description:

This is an excellent example of a Winchester Model 1873 Carbine that was manufactured in 1899. This carbine has the third style receiver with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The black walnut stock has a carbine style buttplate with sliding brass trap door. The carbine has a standard length, 20-inch, round barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel has a standard steel block front sight and folding leaf rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER"S REPEATING ARMS, NEW HAVEN. CT./KING"S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED. MARCH 29. 1866 OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber: "44 W.C.F." is roll stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The brass cartridge elevator is marked: "44 CAL". "MODEL 1873." is roll stamped in fancy letters on the upper receiver tang with foliate decorations on either side of the marking. The serial number "535371B" is stamped on the lower receiver tang between the loading lever latch and the rear tang screw.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The carbine is completely original and retains 90% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel, magazine tube and receiver. The barrel and magazine have 95% of the original blue finish with some minor handling wear on the top of the barrel between the front sight and the forearm. The sides and top of the receiver have most of the original blue finish with light edge wear and some scattered age spotting. The underside of the receiver and upper tang show handling wear and the blue finish has faded to a brown patina. Most of the case-colors on the hammer and loading lever are present. The buttplate shows expected handling wear and has aged to a deep brown patina. The markings on the barrel and receiver are crisp. The stock is in excellent condition with some scattered and minor handling marks, The forearm is in very fine condition with moderate handling wear and a shallow chip on the left side behind the barrel band The bore is bright. 19th Century Winchester lever action carbines were usually working firearms that show hard use and are rarely encountered with original finish. This is an excellent example of a Winchester Model 1873 Saddle-Ring Carbine.
