The barrel and receiver have a blue finish, The forearm cap, hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with a varnish finish. The buttplate has a sliding brass door. The butt trap contains a four-piece jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEWHAVEN. CT./ KING"S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." ahead of the rear sight. "38 Cal" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is engraved "38 CAL.". The top of the receiver tang is roll-stamped with the third style marking: "MODEL. 1873"in fancy letters with foliate designs at either end. The serial number, "450008B" at the end of the lower between the tang screws.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 40% of the faded original blue finish on the barrel and receiver. Most of the blue finish on the receiver has aged to a dark patina. The barrel retains most of the blue finish with edge wear on high points. The case colors on the forearm cap, loading lever and buttplate have faded to silver gray. Most of the original case colors remain on the hammer. The markings on the barrel and receiver are crisp. The stock and forearm have been lightly sanded and refinished but remain in very good overall condition with minimal handling wear. This is a solid example of a Winchester Third Model 1873 Rifle with special order barrel and half-magazine.
