Description:

This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1893 in the desirable 45-90 W.C.F. caliber. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight and "45-90 W.C.F." at the breech end. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1886" and the lower tang is marked with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates directly behind the trigger and the serial number to the rear. The barrel is equipped with a silver blade front sight, adjustable rear buckhorn sight and there is a crudely mounted tang mounted short range peep sight (which has a broken retention spring causing it to flop around). Full magazine tube, blue finished barrel and magazine tube, with casehardened finish on the remaining parts. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 60% of the thin original blue finish with the balance having a smooth plum brown patina. The magazine tube retains 70% original blue finish with streaks of brown patina. The receiver shows much of the original casehardening pattern with a smooth silver gray on the balance. Traces of the original case colors remain in protected areas of the lever and hammer with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The buttplate has a smooth dark patina. The wood has had a coat of varnish applied overall and remains fine with overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings remain clear. Mechanically excellent.
