Winchester Model 1895 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1901. The rifle is chambered for the desirable .38-72 Winchester cartridge that was designed for and introduced with the Model 1895 Winchester. The rifle has a blue finish with casehardened crescent buttplate and varnished, black walnut, stock and forearm. The barrel is fitted with a factory dove-tail mounted Marbels Duplex front sight that features a fine gold bead on a fixed blade and a larger with bead on a hinged post and sporting style rear sight with rear aperture adjusting screw. The rifle has the standard forearm with flared tip and stock with crescent steel buttplate. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "38-72 W.C.F." is stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." above the New Haven address and '95-'98 patent dates. The serial number "33195" is located on the lower tang.

Fine. The rifle retains 70% of the original blue finish. Most of the blue on the barrel remains; the finish has faded slightly and shows some thinning. The blue on the sides of the receiver and protected areas of the magazine is bright. The finish on the edges and contact points on the top of the receiver, trigger guard and lever shows handling wear and has faded to a blue-gray patina. The case colors on the buttplate have aged to a mottled silver gray. The stock and forearm have light handling wear and retain approximately 30% of the original varnish. The barrel and frame markings are crisp, The bore is bright. The action is tight. This is a fine example of a Winchester Model 1895 Sporting Rifle chambered for the desirable Winchester .38-72 cartridge.
