Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1891. The rifle has a fulloctagon barrel and full length magazine. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with a varnish finish. The stock has a crescent steel buttplate. The barrel has a dovetail mounted front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style rear sight. Special order detachable sling swivel mounts are fitted to the magazine and stock. The receiver, forearm cap, hammer, loading lever and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine are blued. The top barrel flat is roll stamped with the legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "45-90 W.C.F." is roll stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll stamped with the first style marking: "- MODEL 1886-". The two line,1884 and 1885 patent dates are located on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger and the serial number, "58151" is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the tang screws.

Fine. The rifle retains 70% of the original blue and 50% color case-hardened finish. The sides of the receiver, loading lever and hammer have strong case colors. The case colors on the contact points of the upper and lower receiver, lever, forearm cap sling swivel mount and buttplate have faded to a smooth silver patina. There are some light polishing marks on the left side of the receiver at the junction with the forearm and some spots of minor age discoloration on the buttplate. The bolt retains nearly all of the original blue finish. The blue finish on the loading gate has faded to a blue brown patina. The barrel and receiver retain at least 90% of the original blue finish with high point edge wear. There is a small (1/2-inch) series of dents and minor finish loss on right side of the barrel and adjacent portion of the magazine tube. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are in fine overall condition with exception of the crudely affixed rear swivel. Most of the original varnish finish remains intact, wear is limited to scattered, light handling marks with some minor scratches and bruised on the right wrist. This is a fine example of a Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with the very desirable, early, case-hardened finish on the receiver.
