This Winchester Model 1873 musket is a Third Model with the guide rail integrally machined as part of the receiver and features a 30" round barrel, 27" magazine, full length forend with three barrel bands, square base front sight/bayonet lug, military style folding leaf rear sight graduated to 800 yards and carbine style buttplate with buttstock compartment containing an original 5 piece cleaning rod. The middle barrel band and butt are fitted with sling swivels. The top of the barrel is marked "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in front of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "44 W.C.F" is located behind the rear sight. "44 CAL" is also marked on the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The top of the receiver tang is marked "MODEL.1873." flanked by the foliate design and the lower tang is marked with the serial number. The hammer, lever, trigger and buttplate are casehardened and the remaining surfaces are blue. Mounted with a smooth oiled walnut forearm and straight grip stock.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The musket retains 98% plus of the original blue finish, with a dried oil residue covering all of the metal surfaces. The lever, hammer and buttplate retain almost all of the original case colors, dulling on the buttplate, brighter on the lever and hammer, with the same residue present. The wood is also excellent with exception of numerous small pressure dents on the stock and overall some scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings are clear and crisp. The action is excellent. With just a little cleaning this would be an exceptional Model 1873 Musket.
