Description:

This is a solid representative example of a very rare and very desirable early first production Model 1901 Mannlicher pistol-carbine. This model ushered in the first of many new and unique semi-automatic designed pistols from the Mannlicher company, which continue on even today. The designer Austrian Ferdinand Ritter Von Mannlicher, was one of the world's best weapon designers in the late 1800s. He was an early supporter and very instrumental in the early development of semi-automatic firearms for both pistols and rifles throughout Europe. This series of pistol-carbine was based on the continuation of his 1896 pistol design. Many designers and collectors have stated that they thought his pistol-carbine designs were better balanced than the 1896 Mauser design but never attained the reputation and sales volume that the Mauser model did. This pistol carbine is a very unique and innovative design in that it operates using a concealed internal hammer that is initially cocked by depressing a small lever on the right side of the frame. This model fires the 7.63 Mannlicher pistol cartridge which can be loaded through the top of the action using the regular Mannlicher stripper clips, but in actual use it fed from a small detachable box magazine, located on the underside of the action. In actual use, this pistol-carbine uses a standard blow-back design, that after firing, starts with an initial short throw/rearward movement of the barrel, bolt and upper receiver, which starts the cycling action. This allows the bolt to disengage from the barrel and continue its rearward movement to actually extract a spent cartridge. A new round is stripped from the box magazine and loaded into the chamber. The top of the receiver is dated "1906" with the serial number located on the left side. Directly above the serial number on the flat of the receiver is a small Austrian Eagle proof over a single Crown N proof. The only other serial numbers located on the pistol-carbine is "308" located on the floor plate of the magazine, with no other visible proofs or serial numbers located on the carbine. This model has a military style tangent rear sight graduated from 1-4 (100-400meters) with a fixed inverted "V" type front sight, along with a full length wooden barrel cover or barrel jacket, that acts as a forend, with a small brass reinforcing collar on each end, along with a fixed, full length rifle stock attached to the rear of the action. The stock has small checkered section on the sides of the stock behind the receiver and both the stock and barrel cover have a set of factory installed sling swivels. This pistol-carbine is complete with a copy of an article describing the specific technical attributes, disassembly procedures and shooting characteristic of this little carbine. Certainly a wealth of information on this rare little pistol-carbine.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 80% of the original blued finish on the receiver/action section with the majority of the barrel covered by the barrel jacket. The very front left edge of the receiver has a small area with minor pitting showing, which also may extend to face of the receiver. The barrel jacket/forend and stock both are period refurbished with most of the custom high polished, varnish type finish still remaining overall. Both have a few minor handling marks and light pressure dents overall from years of use. The front and rear end of the barrel jacket/cover has had an old small brass ring added to reinforce both ends so they didn't crack. A very unique and diminutive example of a very rare Mannlicher Model 1901 pistol carbine.
