Description:

This is an excellent example of 1940 dated WWII Mauser "42" code Mauser luger pistol with the scarce Navy marked back strap. The back strap is marked "N/4280 over 4217", indicating that it was issued to the North Sea Navy fleet. The overstamp is interesting. This specific pistol has the all blued metal finish with checkered walnut grips. The chamber area is dated "1940" with the wartime "42"code marking on the front toggle. The right side of the barrel extension has the double "eagle/655" Waffenamt proofs next to the single eagle firing proof, which is also present on the right side of the barrel. The underside of the barrel is also marked with the bore diameter "8,81", along with the serial number of the pistol. Safety and extractor are correctly marked "GESICHERT" and "GELADEN" respectively. It is currently fitted with a later type three, all blued, unmarked milled magazine with an aluminum base that has been restamped "1887 l".

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 90% plus of the original blue finish overall with some minor edge wear with noticeable thinning/browning on the grip straps. The grips are in excellent condition showing nice checkering on both sides with the right side showing a scratch running lengthwise. This luger has all matching parts except the magazine as noted above and the walnut grips. Even with this luger showing some blue loss/browning, it is above average as these lugers saw heavy sea service use and suffered from salt spray which caused considerable corrosion in most cases. A nice example of a Nazi Navy issue luger.
