Description:

This is a solid original example of a Savage & North, Second Model, 'Figure 8' percussion revolver that was manufactured in Middletown, Connecticut, between 1858 and 1859. The revolver has the distinctive iron frame and creeping rammer that identify it as a Second Model Figure 8 revolver. Savage & North manufactured about 100 examples of the Second Model Figure 8 revolver. Surviving examples are rare. Number "3" is stamped in the central area of the ramrod lever. The revolver has the unique Figure 8 lever below the trigger that revolves the six-shot cylinder and cocks the hammer. The octagon barrel has a brass cone front sight; a dovetail mounted rear sight is located on the top strap. The iron back strap has a prominent spur. The revolver has varnished, two-piece, walnut grips. The top strap is roll-stamped: "E. SAVAGE. MIDDLETOWN.CT./H.S. NORTH PATENTED. JUNE 17th, 1856." in two lines. The markings appear light because the die used in the first handful of second models was the same die used on the first models. The die would soon be replaced by the 2nd model die, making this gun further rare.

Rating Definition:

Good. The revolver has a dark patina with scattered light pitting and surface rust. Traces of the original blue finish are visible on the underside of the barrel beneath the loading lever. The percussion nipples are battered and show moderate-heavy flash pitting. The screw heads are battered. The factory legend on the top strap is faint but legible. The grips are in good overall condition and retain a substantial amount of the original varnish finish. The revolver appears to be completely original and the action is fine. This is a solid example of a very rare Savage & North, Second Model, Figure 8 percussion revolver in un-touched 'attic' condition.
