Description:

Manufactured in 1906, this a very nice example of one of only 926 Colt Model 1905 Double Action Revolvers purchased by the Marine Corps between 1905 and 1909 with equally rare russet leather Marine Corps holster. The Model 1905 Revolver was the first handgun manufactured specifically for the Marine Corps. This revolver was a New Model Army and Navy revolver with a modified grip frame and distinctive two-piece checkered walnut grips with a rounded contour butt. The butt is marked with the serial number: "No./545" (10545) in front of the lanyard swivel and "U.S./M.C." behind it. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line Colt Hartford address / "AUG.5.1884 NOV.6.88. MAR.5.95" patent dates. The left side of the barrel is marked "COLT.D.A.38" and the circled Rampant Colt is on the left rear of the frame above the grip. The assembly number "109" is stamped on the inside of the grip, the crane and on the cylinder latch. A trident Navy inspection mark is stamped on the cylinder face and a five-pointed star with a "W" in the center is stamped on the heel of the right grip. The left side of the trigger guard bow is stamped with an inverted triangle with a "W" in the center. The revolver has the high polish Colt blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and frame. The trigger and hammer top have a niter blue finish and the sides of the hammer are polished. The ejector rod and lanyard swivel are casehardened. The russet leather "USMC" embossed full flap holster is secured by a brass snap on the flap and has a belt loop on the back secured by three round-head iron rivets. The holster has no visible marker's markings. The revolver and holster are accompanied by a WWI pattern lanyard.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, as partially refinished (side plate). The revolver retains 90% of the bright original high polish blue finish. There is an extremely minor patch of flaking with some light pitting on the top of the barrel and another on the cylinder, some tiny areas of minor pitting on the top strap. There is some finish wear with some scattered light pitting on the right side plate and some finish wear on the bottom of the trigger guard, right side of the trigger and on the high edges of the frame and cylinder. The grips are also excellent with some handling wear on the crisp checkered surfaces. The markings are sharp. The action is excellent. The holster is also excellent with some very minor scuffs and some moderate flex marks and edge wear. The embossed "USMC" marking on the flap is sharp and the stitching is tight. This is an attractive example of one of the rarest Colt martial revolvers with an equally rare USMC holster.
