U.S. Navy dress blue uniform with extra jacket, of Medal of Honor recipient and WWII Ace, Captain David McCampbell. Captain McCampbell was credited with the destruction of 34 Japanese aircraft in air combat. The top U.S. Navy fighter ace of WWII and the third highest scoring U.S. fighter pilot in WWII, McCampbell was the highest scoring U.S. fighter pilot to survive WWII. Flying a F6F "Hellcat", Captain McCampbell was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for intercepting a force of 80 Japanese aircraft and personally destroying seven enemy aircraft on June 19, 1944 and attacking a group of 60 Japanese aircraft and shooting down nine aircraft on October 24, 1944. On both occasions, McCampbell's aggressive action prevented significant damage to the U.S. fleet. Captain McCampbell was the only U.S. aviator ever to achieve "ace in a day" status twice. Following Battle of the Philippine Sea ("Great marinas Turkey Shoot") McCampbell commanded the Carrier Air Group (CAG) on the U.S.S. Essex. Under Captain McCampbell's command, the Essex CAG destroyed 315 Japanese aircraft in the air and 348 aircraft on the ground while sinking more enemy ships than any CAG in the Pacific Theater. For his service in WWII, Captain McCampbell was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with "V" for Valor, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two gold stars and the Air Medal with a gold star. Following WWII Captain McCampbell commanded the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard; he retired in 1964 and died in 1996. The medium weight, worsted wool blue dress uniform has a tailor's tag in the right inside pocket from the "NAVAL UNIFORM SHOP/BROOKLYN NEW YORK" that reads: "D. McCAMPBELL/CAPT. USN/ 3/14/63/REMARKS: SEW ON RIBBONS". Decorations on the uniform include sewn medal ribbons for the Congressional Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, Silver Star, Legion of Honor with "V", Distinguished Flying Cross with two stars, Air Medal with star, Presidential Unit Citation with star, American Defense Service Medal with "A", European Campaign Medal with star, American campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one silver and two bronze stars, Navy Occupation Service Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two stars. A gold bullion Navy Aviator's Wing is sewn above the medal ribbons. The gold bullion four stripes and one star of a Navy Captain are sewn on the blouse sleeves. Also included in this lot is a U.S. Navy Ensign dress blue service blouse made by D. Klein & Brothers. The left chest has bullion Naval Aviator's wings. Accompanying the blouse are two Lieutenant (Junior Grade) shoulder boards. This is a one-of-a-kind uniform of the highest scoring U.S. Navy fighter pilot and the top U.S. fighter ace to both receive the Congressional Medal of Honor and survive WWII. This is a rare and historic, museum quality uniform that would be the center piece of any advanced aviation collection.

Captain McCampbell's uniform is in excellent condition with very minimal wear. The medal ribbons are bright and the bullion insignia shows only minimal tarnish.
