Description:

U.S. Navy dress blouse and trousers of Rear Admiral Eugene B. Fluckey (1913-2007). Lieutenant Commander Fluckey was captain of the submarine U.S.S. Barb (SS220) on five war patrols against the Japanese. Under Lieutenant Commander Fluckey's command, the U.S.S. Barb sank 29 Japanese ships including the aircraft carrier Unyo, totaling 146,808 tons, between March 1944 and July 1945. In addition to torpedo attacks on Japanese naval and merchant shipping, the U.S.S. Barb destroyed five small vessels and 69 sampans with gunfire, attacked shore targets with gunfire and rockets on seven occasions and destroyed a trawler by ramming. On July 23, 1945, a landing party from the U.S.S. Barb planted explosives that destroyed a railway engine and sixteen cars on the Japanese mainland. This was the only landing by the U.S. military on the Japanese home islands during WWII. Although the U.S.S. Barb was repeatedly attacked by warships and aircraft, not a single member of the crew was wounded in action during Lieutenant Commander Fluckey's command. For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepid actions against the Japanese Empire, Lieutenant Commander Fluckey was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and an unprecedented four Navy Cross awards, making him the most decorated U.S. serviceman of WWII. In addition to the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross with three gold stars, Fluckey received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal with one star and the Legion of Merit with two stars. Under the command of Lieutenant Commander Fluckey, the U.S.S. Barb received two Presidential Unit Citations and a Navy Unit Commendation. Lieutenant Commander Fluckey remained in the Navy following WWII and retired as a Rear Admiral in 1972. The blue, medium weight worsted wool blouse has a Yokosuka, Japan, tailor's label and the embroidered name tag "E.B. Fluckey" in the lining. The right breast of the jacket has the medal ribbon for the Congressional Medal of Honor centered above the medal ribbons for the Navy Cross with three gold stars, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal ribbon with one gold star and the medal ribbon for the Legion of Merit with two stars. A gold Submarine Warfare Badge is pinned above the medal ribbons and a silver WWII Submarine Combat Patrol Badge with three stars is pinned below the medal ribbons. Both sleeves have gold bullion Rear Admiral's insignia. The uniform is complete with a matching pair of blue wool trousers. This is a historic and unique uniform of a legendary WWII submarine captain and the most highly decorated U.S. serviceman of WWII. Uniforms associated with the Congressional Medal of Honor are rarely offered for sale to the public.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The uniform is in outstanding condition with no evidence of deterioration. The only wear is the expected tarnish on the good bullion Rear Admiral's sleeve insignia. This is a unique and historic uniform that is outstanding in every respect.
