Description:

Pre-war U.S. Contract Colt M1911A1 shipped from Colt to Springfield Armory as part of a lot of 2000 pistols on March 29, 1941. The pistol has the late, pre-war, Colt brush blue finish and is fitted with checkered walnut stocks. The left side of the frame below the slide stop cut-out and the top of the frame to the right of the disconnector hole are stamped with the Provisional Ordnance Inspection Mark, "R.S.", in a rectangle. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the top of the slide ahead of the rear sight and on the left side of the frame below the magazine release. The serial number, "725003" is located on the right side of the frame and on the rear of the slide underneath the firing pin stop. The barrel is blued and marked: on the lower left side of the chamber. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the left side of the barrel lug and a large "G" Colt inspection mark is stamped on the underside of the barrel just ahead of the lug. The barrel appears to be original to the pistol. The right side of the frame is roll-stamped: "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" behind the slide stop hole and "M1911A1 U.S. ARMY" ahead of it. The left side of the trigger guard bow is stamped with the Colt "VP/Triangle" proofmark below a "T" assembler's mark. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped with the Colt 1897-1913 patents dates in two lines and the two-line Hartford address separated by the Rampant Colt trademark. The pistol has the correct milled trigger with checkered face, short hammer and improved 1924 style slide stop. Colt M1911A1 pistols continued to be fitted with walnut stocks until about serial number 730,000 when the change-over to the brown plastic "Coltrock" stocks was fully implemented. The "R.S." inspected pistols were the last U.S. contract M1911A1 pistols manufactured by Colt; the parkerized finish was introduced around serial number 737000. "R.S." inspected Colt M1911A1 pistols typically saw WWII service and are difficult to find in very fine to excellent condition.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The pistol retains 90% of the original blue finish. Most of the finish wear is concentrated to a general browning of the front strap. Wear is limited to several small areas of light pitting on the top and right side of the frame between the front sight and the recoil spring housing. The barrel retains 90% of the original blue finish with minor cycling marks on the chamber at the muzzle. The walnut stocks are in very good overall condition; the checkering shows some moderate handling wear; the wear is most pronounced near the heels of the stocks. The pistol is complete with a full blue WWII magazine that retains 95% of the original finish. This is a very fine, original, example of a scarce, "R.S." inspected Colt M1911A1 pistol with blue finish and walnut stocks.
