Description:

The one of a king folk art decorated jug was made for the family members of Murray Samuel Van Deuson, an employee of the Red Wing Pottery, whose responsibility was to fire the pottery pieces in the kiln. Mr. Van Deuson passed away at the pottery and the fellow potters made this beautiful presentation jug for his family as an act of respect. The two gallon cobalt decorated bristol glaze jug features a wreath with "M.S. Van. Deuson" below the wreath is another larger wreath with two doves in mid flight one with a letter in the beak the other with a olive branch. Below is an anchor to represent the his love of the water. The remainder of the jug is filled with a gorgeous scene of a shepherd watching over his sheep. In the background the sun is either setting or rising on the horizon. The detail is amazing detail in the presentation makes this a very desirable piece of American Folk Art. Great granddaughter Gorsy Nelson sold the jug in the summer of 2006 at the Red Wing Convention and provided the history of the jug. (It was immediately placed on loan to the Red Wing Stoneware Museum where it resided for nearly four years). She also stated that the family genealogy traces back to Holland where members of the family were potters in Amsterdam before immigrating to New York. Martin Van Buren the eighth President of the United States is a relative as well. H 12", W 9 1/4"

Rating Definition:

The jug is in excellent, totally original condition with exception of three chips one on the spout, one on the handle and one on the base at the rear of the jug.
