Description:

Beautiful salt glaze match holder with the song title " What is a home without a mother" incised with a block stamp at the base. In addition to being incised with "F. Korsmeyer, Cairo, ILL" dated "1889". The matches rest in the hog troughs above the mother sow laying down to feed her four suckling pigs. The bottom of the piece is a wonderful demonstration of the Kaolin clay that was used to make Anna Pottery. The bottom is incised with "Anna Ill". At a later date someone wrote in ink the words "Compliment of Jno. T. March" below is what appears to be a city and another date but this area is unreadable. It appears that the piece must have been gifted to someone at a later date. Mr. Korsmeyer was the Clerk of the Board of Education in Cairo, Illinois. One can read into his motives (financial for business, political, or quite simply religion for family life) for commissioning Anna Pottery to make this unique piece! H 2", W 5", L 7"

Rating Definition:

The entire piece is in excellent, totally original condition overall. A truly spectacular piece of Anna Pottery!
