Rare Ohio salt glaze stoneware Slave Jug with cobalt decoration on the front of two foliage branches crossed outlined with a unique free hand border. Stamped "WESTHAFER AND LAMBRIGHT," "1865" "8" on the back. Two large strap handles applied to either side. Westhafer and Lambert appear in the Twenty-First Annual Report of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture, for the Year 1866 as a "Manufacturing Establishment" located near Urichsville in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and a search in the 1870 Federal Census reveals the pottery's specific presence in Mill Township. H 20 1/2 " W 12 1/2"

Rating Definition:

The jug is in very fine condition with a few kiln burns near the base and once small glaze pop with a hair line.
