Description:

Exclusively manufactured by the Siemens Company, the SSK 90 flight helmet was officially adopted by the Luftwaffe on May 8, 1941. The helmet is constructed out of interlocking and hinged steel plates designed to protect the head from shrapnel with ear cut-outs designed to accommodate the receivers found on the cloth and leather flight helmets. Leather covers the steel plates with a large protruding pad or comb running from the front visor to the crown. The comb was designed to protect the head from direct frontal impact during crash landings. The chinstrap assembly are components such as the leather, buckle and snaps identical to that found on German paratrooper helmets. A Siemens label is sewn on the inside of the helmet. The SSK 90 was officially withdrawn from service on May 26, 1941 due to the weight of the steel plates. Having been used for a short time, the SSK 90 is a scarce pre-jet age flight helmet. It should be noted that for many years collectors incorrectly assumed that the SSK 90 helmet was specifically made for pilots flying the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter and therefore incorrectly labeled the SSK 90 as a "jet fighter helmet".

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The leather shows some very scattered mild handling and scuff marks with some age cracking on the solid comb. The stitching is tight and the interior lining shows little wear.
