Description:

Unsure of the exact model, but shares characteristics of more than one model of Ballard rifle. The left side of the receiver is marked "MARLIN FIRE ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A./BALLARD'S. PATENT. NOV. 5, 1861.", the matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame and on the bottom barrel flat under the forearm. The barrel is equipped with an adjustable front globe sight, with no provisions for a rear sight and has a tang mounted vernier peep sight. The top barrel flat at the breech is marked "38-55". Adjustable double set triggers, blue barrel with casehardened remaining parts and mounted with a checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with cheekpiece and steel Swiss style buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 90% original blue finish thinning to a smooth plum and showing some scattered minor spotting. The receiver retains 60% original case colors with the balance a smooth mottled brown patina. The lever has a smooth mottled grayish brown patina, and the buttplate has a smooth dark brown patina. The wood is very fine with scattered minor dings, scratches and very crisp checkering. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
