Description:

Unsure of the exact model, but shares characteristics of more than one model of Ballard rifle. The left side of the receiver is marked "MARLIN FIRE ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A./BALLARD'S. PATENT. NOV. 5, 1861.", the matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame and on the bottom barrel flat under the forearm. The barrel is equipped with an adjustable front globe sight, with a filler block in the rear dovetail and has a mid-range tang mounted vernier peep sight. The top barrel flat at the breech is marked "32-40". Adjustable double set triggers, blue barrel with casehardened remaining parts and mounted with a checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with cheekpiece and nickel plated steel Swiss style buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 80% plus thinning original blue finish with scattered pitting on right side. The receiver retains 60% original case colors with some fading to a smooth dove gray. The lever has a smooth mottled gray patina with traces of original case colors in protected areas. The buttplate retains 80% original nickel plating with a smooth dark patina on the exposed areas. The wood is very good with some dark areas near the buttplate, some scattered minor dings and crisp checkering. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
