Description:

Made in 1857, as part of an Ordnance Department contract which was primarily destined for the United States Army. Cone front and hammer notch rear sights, with "-ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.-" on the top barrel flat, "COLT'S/ PATENT/ U.S." on the left side of the frame, and the Texas Navy scene on the cylinder. Matching numbers on the barrel, loading lever, cylinder, frame and grip straps. Small Ordnance Department sub-inspection stamps are present on most major components, with "C" on the grip straps, barrel and left stock heel, "T" and "K" on the cylinder, "H" on the left side of the barrel, and "V" and "G" on the trigger guard. Smooth one piece grips, with no visible cartouche. Model 1851 Navy Revolvers were first issued to the 1st and 2nd U.S. Cavalry Regiments in 1858 and subsequently replaced the Colt M1848 Dragoon Revolver as the standard handgun for the Dragoons and U.S. Mounted Rifles prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. As a result of hard use in the west prior to the late 1850s and subsequent use during the Civil War, U.S. Contract "Army" Navy Revolvers are rarely found with significant amounts of original finish intact.

Rating Definition:

Near excellent, with 85% plus original blue and casehardened finish, showing light scratches on the barrel, battering around the edge, and mild edge wear. Cylinder has been professionally renumbered, retains most of the roll-engraved scene and about 60% of the blue finish with an area of discoloration around the aforementioned serial number area. All cylinder pins are intact, with minimal flash pitting around the nipples. The case colors are vivid and bright. The grip straps show a fine aged patina. Grip is very good, with mild wear and a small chip on the left toe. Timing needs minor adjustment, otherwise mechanically very good. An exceptional example of an "Army" Model 1851 Navy Revolver.
