Description:

Manufactured in 1919, this Colt Pre Woodsman pistol was special ordered and engraved for presentation to Samuel Colt, the Grandson of Samuel P. Colt. The pistol has the standard two line address/1903 and 1918 patent dates and the right side of the slide is marked "COLT AUTOMATIC/CAL. 22 LONG RIFLE" followed by the Rampant Colt. The left front of the frame is engraved with the Colt Family Crest and the left side of the slide is engraved "SAMUEL P. COLT TO HIS GRANDSON/SAMUEL COLT - SEPTEMBER 1. 1919". Samuel Pomeroy Colt was the youngest of six children born to Christopher Colt, the brother of Samuel Colt. Samuel P. Colt was an industrialist and politician from rhode Island. In 1875 he was appointed aide-de-camp to Rhode Island Governor Henry Lippitt receiving the honorary rank of "Colonel". He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1876. He was involved in efforts to regulate child labor and advance womens' property rights. He became Assistant Attorney General for Rhode Island and elected Attorney General in 1882. In 1886 he founded the Industrial Trust Company and he served as President until 1908. The bank later was known as Industrial National Bank and Fleet Bank before merging into Bank of America. He served as President of the National India Rubber Company until 1918 when he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He made an unsuccessful bid for Governor of Rhode Island in 1903 and dropped out of politics in 1907, possibly due to poor health. He had three sons Samuel Pomeroy Jr., Russell Griswold and Roswell Christopher. Russell went on to marry actress Ethel Barrymore. Its from that marriage came his grandson Samuel Colt one of three children born to the couple. The pistol has the pencil barrel, pinned blade front and notch rear sight sights, the oval checkered panel on the back strap, smooth trigger, Colt marked jeweled magazine and fitted with checkered walnut grip. The pistol is complete in a white leatherette presentation case with purple velvet lining. The case is fitted for two guns, this pistol and a 3 inch barreled revolver and two cleaning rods, (not included). One can safely assume that both handguns were presented to Samuel from his grandfather. The accompanying Colt Factory letter the serial number 16330 as 22 cal, 6 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, grips "Not Listed", that it was shipped to Colonel William B. Skinner at the Colt Patent fire-Arms Manufacturing Co., Hartford, Connecticut, for Master Sam P. Colt, on work order #1491, October 18, 1919. Under remarks is stated "It is of further interest to note that Col. Skinner was President of the Colt company from 1916 to 1922, and Samuel Pomeroy colt was Sam Colt's nephew. He was born on July 10, 1852 and died August 13, 1921 at the age of 69."

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The pistol retains 98% original blue finish with some minor muzzle wear, scattered surface blemishes and a few minor scratches. The grips are excellent with only the slightest handling marks and sharp checkering. Markings and engraving are clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with some noticable stains, missing material on the corners and flaking of the leatherette cover. The lining is excellent with minimal wear. An exceptional, One-of-a-Kind, documented Colt Pre Woodsman, special ordered and engraved for presentation to a Colt family member. An extraordinary find and certainly the center piece in any Colt Auto collection.
