Description:

This is an example of an unissued Triplett & Scott carbine that was manufactured in 1865 by the Meriden Manufacturing Company as part of a contract of 5,000 carbines to arm the Kentucky Home Guard, however, the carbines were received too late to be used in the Civil War. Only about 2,000 22 inch barrel carbines were manufactured. The carbine has a blued barrel, rear sight, barrel band and barrel support. The receiver, hammer, trigger guard, and buttplate are casehardened. The carbine features a seven-round magazine and is loaded by twisting the barrel to align with the magazine on the lower left side of the receiver. Pinched blade front and folding ladder rear sights. The serial number is stamped on the right side of the frame. The lower left side of the frame is marked "MERIDEN MAN'FG. CO./MERIDEN, CONN." and the left side of the breech is marked "KENTUCKY". The patent marking: "TRIPLETT & SCOTT/ATENT DEC. 6, 1864" is marked on the upper receiver tang. Mounted with a smooth oil finished walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate and a sling swivel mounted on the heel and toe.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains 95% plus of the original blue finish. The frame retains 90% plus of the original case colors. Overall there is a protective coat of varnish on the metal surfaces. The buttplate retains strong vivid original case colors. The wood is excellent with a few overall minor pressure marks. Mechanically excellent. This is a truly exceptional unissued original Triplett & Scott carbine!
