Description:

Manufactured circa 1846 to 1847, this is a scarce example of a Jenks-Remington carbine with U.S. Revenue Cutter Service marking. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked "W. JENKS / U.S.R. / P / 1847 / CAST-STEEL". The lock plate is marked "REMINGTON'S HERKIMER / N.Y.". The underside of the breech lever is stamped with the number "7 / 43". Barrel is brown and the trigger, lock, hammer, and breechblock have a casehardened finish. The buttplate, trigger guard, and barrel bands are brass. Front sight is integral to the front barrel band. As a U.S. Revenue Cutter Service carbine, the firearm correctly has a round loading aperture and is without a sling ring. The underside of both standard Jenks-Remington barrel bands are drilled for screws and the forearm has an exposed ramrod channel. Consignor notes state that the ramrod channel was probably some type of prototype wherein it was decided to experiment with the exposed slot with a wood ramrod (ramrod is included).

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 40% original brown finish with even minor surface rust. The hammer, lock, breech block and trigger retain traces of original case colors with the balance a dark silver gray. The brass is taking on an attractive dark aged patina. The stock is also fine with some scattered minor dings and scratches with few minor slivers of wood missing from the ramrod channel.
