Description:

This is a very fine example of a Triplett & Scott carbine manufactured in 1865 by the Meriden Manufacturing Company as part of a contract of 5,000 carbines to arm the Kentucky Home Guard, however the carbines were received too late to be used in the Civil War. Some 3,000 30-inch barrel carbines were manufactured. The carbine has a blue barrel, with a pinched blade front and folding ladder rear sights, which lacks graduation markings. The receiver, hammer, trigger guard and buttplate are casehardened. The carbine features a seven-round magazine and is loaded by twisting the barrel to align with the magazine on the lower left side of the receiver. The serial number is stamped on the right side of the frame. The lower left side of the frame is marked "MERIDEN MAN'FG. CO./MERIDEN, CONN." and the left side of the breech is marked "KENTUCKY". The patent marking: "TRIPLETT & SCOTT/PATENT DEC. 6, 1864" is marked on the upper receiver tang. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate and sling swivels mounted on the heel and toe. Small N/W.B. inspectors stamp present on left side of buttstock.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel has 95% blue with the balance a smooth brown patina. The receiver retains 80% plus original case colors with a smooth gray patina on upper tang and areas on the upper portion of the receiver. The wood remains excellent with only a few minor dents and pressure marks. The markings are all sharp. Mechanically excellent.
