Description:

This is an early Civil War production example of a U. S. Springfield Model 1861 rifle-musket, the primary Civil War musket as used by the Union forces. Although nearly 1,000,000 Model 1861 Rifle-Muskets were manufactured by Springfield Armory and various contractors during the Civil War, Springfield Armory muskets manufactured during the first years of production saw hard service and are desirable. This model also served as the pattern for most arms made for military use. The lock plate has the standard "eagle/shield" motif and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" markings ahead of the hammer and is dated "1862" behind it. The left barrel flat has the standard "V / P / eagle head" proof and inspection marks and the top of the barrel is dated "1862". Finished bright, blade front and three leaf rear sights, clean out screw on the bolster, tulip head steel ramrod and mounted with an oil finished black walnut stock with two clear "MFH" and "ESA" cartouches on the left flat and "U.S." marked buttplate tang. Complete with a "US/J" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The fine metal surfaces have dulled with age and there is some scattered minor pitting on the barrel and barrel bands. The stock is excellent with sharp flat edges and some minor dings, dents and handling marks. All markings are clear. The action is excellent. The bayonet is very good.
