Description:

Manufactured for Remington under a sub-contract with Savage Revolving Arms Company, the Split Breech Carbine is doubly significant because it was the first Remington longarm to use metallic cartridges and the last contract arm supplied to the Federal government at the conclusion of the Civil War. These carbines were manufactured circa 1865-1866 with the first delivery to the U.S. five months after the conclusion of the Civil War. The upper receiver tang is marked "REMINGTON'S. ILLION. N.Y. / PAT. DEC. 23. 1863. MAY 3, & NOV. 16, 1864" and the serial number is marked on the front of the frame under the forearm. The bottom of the barrel under the forearm is marked with inspection marks "J.T. / P / S". There is a small "M" on the lower tang and buttplate tang, as well as "US" on the buttplate tang and a "C" on the left side of the rear sight base. Pinched blade front and folding two leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver and mounted with a smooth oiled black walnut forearm and straight grip stock with an iron carbine buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth dark mottled patina. There are a few minor dings on the barrel and there is a small amount of minor pitting on the buttplate heel. The fair is good overall. The forearm shows the bulk of the dings, dents nicks and scratches, with a few minor dents and scratches on the stock, The action needs a little work, the breech block and hammer springs are weak, otherwise they function properly. The markings are clear.
