Description:

Manufactured by Edward Gwyn and Abner Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio with a total production of only 4,000. The breech end of the barrel is octagon and is fitted with a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 600 yards. Sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver. The rear lock plate screw enters from the left side of the stock wrist. The hammer is flat with beveled edges and the lever is the shorter Type II pattern with the vertically mounted claw-like latch. The receiver, rear sight base, hammer, and lever were casehardened. All other metal parts were blue. The lock plate is marked "GWYN & CAMPBELL" in an arch over "PATENT / 1862 / HAMILTON. O." behind the hammer, small "R" at the rear of the lock and "UNION / RIFLE" is marked vertically on the front, right side of the receiver. The left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver is stamped with the letter "C", the right side with a "T" and there is the letter "W" on the upper left front of the receiver. The bottom of the frame, breech block and the lever are marked with the serial number "1567" and the bottom of the barrel is marked "16 6 over 5 ?". Mounted with a smooth walnut stock with a casehardened carbine buttplate and two crisp boxed "WHR" and "RKW" cartouches on the left wrist.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel has a brown patina with some moderate flash pitting on the octagon portion and the remaining parts have a brownish gray patina with flash pitting on the hammer, upper front right side of the frame and breech block with some heavier pitting on the top of the frame ahead of the breech block. The stock is good with some scattered minor scratches. The cartouches are crisp. The UNION on the lock is partially visible, otherwise the markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
