Description:

Manufactured in 1854 of an estimated 3,359 produced. The lock plate is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1854" vertically behind the hammer and the eagle motif over "US" is marked ahead of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1854." Sling swivels are present on the rear barrel band and on the toe of the buttstock, with a brass blade front sight on the front band. The barrel has a bayonet stud on the underside and "V/P/eagle head" markings on the left side at the breech. The tang of the buttplate is marked "U.S." The stock has a very faint outline of an oval cartouche. The top rear of wrist is stamped with the rack number "9". Complete with a replacement European 18" socket bayonet marked "G/3072" on the socket and an iron trumpet head ram rod.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The metal surfaces have a dark patina with moderate pitting present on the barrel, mainly on the rear half. The buttplate is heavily pitted. The stock is good with a number of minor age cracks on the left side of the buttstock and overall some minor dings and dents. The bayonet is good with a mottled gray patina and some scattered minor pitting. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
