Description:

This is an example of a Commercial Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver that was manufactured in 1862. This Fourth Model revolver has the distinctive large rounded trigger guard, capping channel in the recoil shield cut-out and thin contour loading lever latch. The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel and cylinder, color casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer and silver-plated brass trigger guard and back strap. The one-piece walnut grip has a varnish finish. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT NO". "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843" is roll-engraved around the forward edge of the cylinder. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA -" in one line. The two-line "COLTS/PATENT" marking is located on the left side of the frame. A small "C" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard bow. The full serial number, "130820" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number, "0820" is stamped on the loading lever and cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Rating Definition:

Fine as partially refinished. The revolver retains 80% plus of the original blue, casehardened and silver-plated finish. 70% of the blue finish is present on the barrel; finish loss is limited to some minor edge wear and scattered nicks and scratches. The barrel legend is crisp. The cylinder retains most of the roll-engraved naval scene. The cylinder safety pins are battered and the percussion nipples show moderate-heavy flash pitting. The frame has 65% of the color casehardened finish with some silvering on the recoil shield. The hammer and loading lever have a mottled silver gray patina with traces of case colors. The trigger guard and back strap have about 80% of the silver-plated finish. The plating is thinning on the top of the back strap. The varnished grip is in very good condition with minimal handling wear. The grip retains about 25% of the original varnish in protected areas. The action is tight and functions well. This is a solid example of a 1862 production commercial Colt Fourth Model 1851 Navy revolver.
