Description:

This is an exceptional original U.S. Colt Cavalry Model Single Action Army Revolver that was manufactured in 1890. This revolver was manufactured under one of the last two government contracts for 4000 Colt Single Action revolvers (Nov.12, 1889 and Sept.19, 1890). The final inspector for this revolver was Captain Stanhope E. Blunt and the sub-inspector was Rinaldo A. Carr. The revolver has a military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, loading gate and hammer have a color casehardened finish. The one-piece walnut grips have an oil finish. The revolver has the oval ejector rod head that was used on U.S. contract Single Action revolvers between serial number 113,000 and 140,361. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the elongated block address: "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.-" in one line. The underside of the barrel is stamped with a "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark followed by a "P" proofmark. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'three-date/three-line' patent marking followed by the "U.S." property mark. The "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark is stamped on the bottom of the frame above the serial number and on the bottom of the left grip heel. The cylinder is stamped with the "R.A.C." sub-inspectors mark, a "P" proofmark and the partial serial number. The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1890" above the script initials of the final inspector "SEB"; the initials are enclosed in a rectangle with rounded corners. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with the script initials "RAC" in a rectangle. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1899". The full revolver serial number "134123" is stamped on the underside of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "4213" is stamped on the barrel underneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. A "K" Colt sub-inspection mark is stamped beneath the serial number on the trigger guard and back strap and an "O" sub-inspection mark is stamped in the frame hammer well above the firing pin hole.

Rating Definition:

The revolver is completely original and in very fine condition. The barrel retains 95% of the original blue finish and has ''feathered'' polishing marks on either side of the front sight blade. Finish loss is limited to some minor holster wear at the edges of the muzzle and ejector housing. The bore is bright. The cylinder has 60% original blue with the balance a blue-gray patina with bright blue finish in the flutes. The finish on the inside of the grip strap and the back strap has aged to a blue-gray patina. Most of the blue finish is present on the trigger guard. The frame, loading gate and hammer retain 70% of the original case colors. The casehardened finish has faded slightly but retains distinct case colors. The frame screws and trigger retain most of the fiery niter blue finish. The grip is in excellent condition; wear is limited to several minor handling marks on the edge and bottom of the right heel. The date and final inspection mark on the left side of the grip are crisp; the "R.A.C." sub-inspectors mark on the opposite side of the grip shows handling wear but is legible. The barrel markings, proofmarks, sub-inspection marks and serial numbers are very crisp. The action is crisp but the hammer does not hold at half-cock. This is a highly desirable, completely original, example of a 1890 production, "R.A.C." sub-inspected, Colt Single Action Cavalry Model Revolver.
