Description:

This is an excellent, all original example of a World War II Type 2 Japanese takedown "Paratrooper" rifle. These rifles were based on the Type 99 rifle series and were designed to have a removable barrel so that they could be stored in a parachutist's canvas jump bag (not included) that was used when they actually jumped out of the airplane. These rifles were manufactured at the Toriimatsu factory under Nagoya Arsenal control. The top of the receiver has the Chrysanthemum (which is intact) and Kanji markings for "2/Rifle". The left side of the barrel takedown mechanism or attaching section is marked with the assembly numbers (787) and farther back the receiver is correctly marked with the rifle serial number (11895) and the Nagoya arsenal factory mark. It has the later production tangent rear sight graduated to 1,500 meters with the thin anti-aircraft wings, peep sight and an inverted "V" front with guards. It has the two-piece stock with the cupped butt plate, side mounted sling swivels, and a drain hole in front of the trigger guard. The front barrel band is the two screw model and the rear is the later plain slotted pattern. The takedown hardware is matching on the side plates and the bolt extractor and cocking knob match the rifle. The bolt is the correct plum shaped version and it is fitted with a non-matching sheet metal dust cover, standard late war hardwood stock with the large drain hole in front of the trigger guard. This rifle is complete with one of the late war plastic push on muzzle covers and cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Virtually in unissued condition with 99% of the original wartime blue finish with just minor edge and high spot wear overall. With some light thinning on top of the front barrel band where it has been picked up over the years. The stock, forend and hand guards are all in excellent condition with a nice matching original stock finish with only minor handling marks in a few places. As noted this rifle has matching serial numbers, except for the dust cover. A superb example of a late WWII Japanese type two paratrooper rifle with especially beautiful stock. This is the best Japanese Type 2 that we have handled.
