Description:

This is an exceptional example of a Colt U.S. Army Contract Model 1892 DA revolver that was manufactured in 1893. This revolver, serial number 10003 is the fourth U.S. Army Contract Model 1892 revolver manufactured; serial numbers for these revolvers started at 10,000. The revolver has the high polish blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder. The trigger and top surfaces of the hammer are niter blue and the sides of the hammer are polished bright. The ejector rod has a casehardened finish. The two-piece walnut grips are varnished. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Colt Hartford address above the 1888 and 1892 barrel dates. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT D.A. 38" in one line. The underside of the barrel is stamped with a "P" proofmark, the assembly number "4" and the "RAC" inspection mark of Ordnance Sub-inspector Rinaldo A. Carr. The revolver butt is roll-stamped: "U.S./ARMY/MODEL/1892/No/10/003" in seven lines. "RAC" is stamped on the left edge of the frame. The cylinder latch is stamped with a "K" Colt inspection mark and the assembly number "4". The rear face of the cylinder is stamped with the "RAC" inspection mark, a "P" proofmark and the assembly number "4". The assembly number "4" is stamped on the inside of the frame and the crane. All of the assembly numbers match.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 98% of the original high polish blue finish. Wear is limited to some very minor finish loss on the underside of the barrel beneath the ejector and some scattered edge wear on the cylinder and frame. The trigger, hammer and screws retain most of the fiery niter blue finish. The grips are in excellent condition with nearly all of the original oil finish and only very minor storage wear. All of the markings are crisp. The bore is bright. The action functions perfectly. This is an outstanding example of one of the very first U.S. Army Contact Colt Model 1892 resolvers manufactured in excellent, unissued, original condition. It would be nearly impossible to improve on this seldom encountered, highly desirable Model of Colt revolver.
